Welcome To My Page -

My name is Wenyan and I am an Oakland High Wildcat! March 2020, the month of schools shut down. To be honest I felt happy at first because I've never had class at home. As time went by, excitement was gradually eliminated by disappointment. Distance learning is boring. I couldn’t go out to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. I couldn’t go out to eat, when I was outside I needed to put my mask on and keep social distance. The shops were closed, we were officially in quarantine. We couldn’t do that much during distance learning. I couldn’t see my friends and classmates. It was harder to get help from teachers and counselors when you needed it compared to in-person learning. It was harder to do my senior project at home because there were too many things that could distract me. I also needed to take care of my siblings at home. Every day the news showed how many people died because of COVID and Hate crime incidents. People went on march then more and more people died. Teenagers couldn’t go to schools, adults lost their jobs, seniors faced the exposure to the danger of the virus. Babies were crying because they didn’t get enough food. I felt terrible about the lives that were being lost and the challenges people were having to live through and hope I can go back to 2019. I was overwhelmed with all the changes that were happening. It changed everyone’s life, and I knew that we couldn't go back to normal forever. You can't bring people back to life.

Time flies, I slowly adapted to this new mode of learning and caught up on all my late assignments. With many teachers’ help, I successfully graduated from high school and went to college. I became more optimistic. I went out hiking with my mask on, I cut my hair and did other new changes. I can’t change the world. But I can change myself. Shelter in place makes me have more time to stay with my family and get closer to my siblings. It also challenges me to keep focused on my work. Pandemic makes my life worse but shapes a better me. I keep learning and exploring new things at home. Now I am in EBAYC Digital Media Marketing program, I feel  really thankful that technology enabled me to learn during the pandemic. I gained not just basic knowledge about building websites but also confidence and valuable friendship there.

This summer, I read an article called “how social media shapes our identity”. I learned that social media has the power to change our lives in generations. I like social media, it allows me to be entertained, share interesting things and connect with different people. However, it is a double-edged sword. If we don’t use it well, it can also rule people’s life. In the author's point of view, social media affects young people and how the relationship between adults and teenagers changed in the era of rapid development of social media. It inspires me a lot, social media makes the cognition on the Internet tend to be more one-sided.
Personally, I want to keep exploring human mental health. Mental health not only affects personal emotion, but also has a huge impact on social well-being. It affects how people think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. I am also interested in psychology, this motivates me to learn more.
